Amas Musical Theatre provides an artistic home for writers, composers,
and lyricists to create and develop new work, from first
draft to full-scale production.
In the last ten years alone Amas has worked with over 60 creative teams in the development of their new musicals, and has professionally presented Labs, Workshops and Mainstage productions to audiences totaling over 50,000.
The Amas Six O'Clock Musical Theatre Lab
The Six O'Clock Musical Theatre Labs Series is a development program for writers, lyricists, and composers to mount staged readings of their new musicals. These are generally first or early readings with an established director and performers, typically after a 29 hour rehearsal period.
Each work generally receives three or four performances and the creative teams benefit from audience feedback (from both industry insiders and the general public). Amas also gives creative teams an opportunity to engage in a structured, in-depth analysis of strengths and weaknesses and gain consensus on the most beneficial next steps.
Amas Workshop Program
The Workshop Program gives composers, lyricists and librettists the opportunity to continue to work on a more polished and
complete version of their new work, with longer rehearsal periods and more production values.
Workshop Productions generally entail a two to three week rehearsal period culminating in a series of performances using minimal costumes, lighting and sets. At this stage, the focus remains on the words and the music.
Amas Mainstage Program
The Amas Mainstage Program gives select musicals a full Off-Broadway run for four to six weeks. The shows are fully produced, and critics attend. These productions generally run under an Equity LOA contract.
